BUSTED !
…my foot that is. I wasn’t dancing, but I got what’s known as a “dancer’s fracture”. It’s is basically an avulsion fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal due to traction exerted from the tendon when the foot is forcefully inverted. In other words, I twisted my ankle when I slipped on some wet stone steps so hard, that the tendon of the muscle that attaches to the outside of my foot pulled hard enough to actually tear off a fragment the bone.
So, looks like my sailing plans are on hold for at least a month. It’s actually not the worst thing in the world, since I had been stretching myself a little too hard to get things done so I could make it to Boston and Maine. Funny how things manifest themselves this way. Mother nature’s way of saying, “Hold on kid, your overdoing it, take it easy for a bit.” So, those projects I was rushing through, will now get the time they deserve, and the long list of projects I’ve neglected might actually get shorter (doubtful).

Sad to hear about your foot… maybe it wont too long to heal? Drink LOTS of milk to and keep elevated as much as possible… I havent been out at all this season. The weekend I splashed Pintle I pulled my back lifting fuel on board… back in May! As you know June has been terrible with weather in Boston… once my back was great the weather wasnt so hopefully be out this weekend.
Can you have Terresa or Rosie sail the boat while you command in a cast? It could be similar to your Chamios vidoes with Rosie… I can invision the Youtube video now…. “Argh you swabs… trim the main Rosie!” At least you could get out on the water while you foot heals? Anyway hope you heal soon. The boat looks great!
Kevin
Ya… you probably did it running up and down your side decks yelling “I’m sailing, I’m sailing”! Those hard turns up by the bitts are tough.
You have gotten a whole boat load of projects done, so enjoy your “time off”. ya, it was intended 8-).
Sorry to hear about your foot but wanted to comment that the “old” boat looks great. Wow … 10 years since she was sailing. BTW … how do you like the feel of her? Initial (no seas or weather) characteristics?
Ben what a bummer, its a cute fracture though, gotta hand it to ya. Much pain/discomfort? I feel for ya my back is getting better but it all takes time….
Stewart, yeah, it’s a bummer alright - but taking life slow has its merits. I notice alot more of my surroundings now as I hobble around at half speed. That’s why sailing is so great, you HAVE to take it slow, stop and smell the roses so to speak. Not much pain, but walking is hard. I need to stay off the foot, and let it heal. Lots of calcium indeed.
Kevin, I’ll see who’s up for a video shoot of said scene… I might have to bust out my patch and parrot. Casting call? Hope you get out this weekend… looks perfect.
Rich, thanks - but she always look better in the pics
Regarding sailing, well she felt SOLID; heavy cutting through waves, with momentum. She feels more like a “big” boat to me. It’s only the 2nd time I’ve sailed a BCC. I’ll need more time underway to comment with precision. But first impressions are COMFORTABLE and SOLID. However, I kept muttering to myself at every tack: “Damn! Two headsails to tack! What the…!!!”
Sorry you’ve hurt your foot — I hope it heals soon! Rest it — elevate it — use ice on it several times a day if it gets swollen or painful.
You’ll be out sailing before you know it, I’m sure. (How cool that you’ve brought an old boat back to life!)
Hey Ben,
At least it wasn’t your coccyx - now that would have been a bummer!
Congratulations on getting the sails full of wind finally!
Mike
Hello,
Soory to hear about the foot… if it makes ya feel any better I almost broke my leg, slipped on the ladder and came landing down on my left shin on the back of the boat…. got a nice knot from that one lol…oh well life goes on.
