MUB Drill: Monitor Under Boomkin
I always wanted to mount it this way. Makes it easier to walk on the boomkin to get to theĀ vane changes and removal. Plus I think it looks alot better, it hides alot of the SS tubing. One thing about the Monitor, it’s not the prettiest contraption on a BCC in my opinion. I’d love to have a Freehand Vane, they areĀ visually slick, and don’t disrupt the beautiful lines of the BCC quite like the Monitor does. However, my plan is to install a wind generator pole on the boomkin, which would inhibit a Freehand vane from spinning fully.
I solved my slipping gear issue on the Monitor by hammering the bronze gears closer together, as recommended by Scanmar. Looks like it will do the job.
The new head hose arrived, I can now complete the head & holding tank refresh…from which I’m currently taking a break to pen this post.

It’s good that you brought the specialized Monitor adjustment tool along with you
How has the Bristol Finish held up? Has it met your expectations?
Bristol Finish has been good so far but still to early to tell. Also I do keep my teak covered 90% of the time. Only piece not covered is the Eyebrow. I will report on that in 5 months and let you know.
My preferred schedule is this now:
4-6 coats of Epifanes Rapid Clear
2-4 coats of Bristol Finish
One thing I did try was a sample patch of Bristol Finish on my main hatch slide. The original 9 coats of Epifanes are showing cracks over the soft seam compound. I coated over top of it all, with minimal prep work, to see how Bristol Finish would do to keep the cracking at bay. So far so good, but it’s only been a month. I’ll snap a pic of what I’m talking about and post that soon.
Ultimately, I think wood has to be covered, down in Florida at least, to preserve the finish–regardless of the finish. The covers are a PITA to sew, but once made they last virtually forever. Like you, I am making covers for everything.
Ben,
This is off topic for this blog page, but at some point would you mind explaining how you stow your inner forestay? I see you have a very handsome ABI release lever and am curious how you deal with the stay when it’s not rigged. After much searching I finally found a similar ABI unit, but would love to locate the Winchard curved bracket that allows the stay to bend so it can be stowed. Is that what you are using?
Cheers,
David
Hi David,
Ya know, I don’t really remove it. The one time I did was for the drifter, which means light winds, so I just let it be on deck and it was fine. Nice option to have though.
